Dogs of Chernobyl
Arecent articlepublished inCanine Medicine and Genetics, reports on the multi-generational impact of radioactive fallout and environmental contamination after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on dogs that were ‘left behind’ in Chernobyl in 1986. The study found that some genes within the dog genome are showing strong evidence of ‘Directional Selection’, which occurs when a population is under pressure from an external factor and some individuals survive better than others.
